Vintage Thingies Thursday - Weekend Flea Market Finds

I am a day behind this week. To my delight, I realized it is Thursday! Make sure you visit our lovely hostess of VTT, Suzanne. She has quite a story to tell as do all the lovers, collectors, savers of all things vintage. Click on the picture at the left to take you there.

Hubs went to a lumber yard auction on Saturday. I didn't go because while auctions are one of my
favorite places to find vintage goodies, I figured a lumber yard auction wouldn't hold much promise. Well, I was right and I was wrong. Across the street from the lumber yard was a huge flea market. Darn! My second favorite place to find vintage goodies.

On Sunday, we decided we needed a break from all the work around here. It was a beautiful day to be out and about. We took a Sunday drive through the rolling hills of North Carolina. First stop was the flea market at Roxboro, which is the one Hubs had seen on Saturday. There were very few vendors there on Sunday. A quick walk through proved fruitless.

Once back in the car, we headed to Raleigh. There is a big flea market there at the state fairgrounds every weekend year round. During the winter, there are a few seasoned vendors that tough out the weather. But with the arrival of spring, there are a couple hundred vendors there. I was like a kid in the toy department!

Here is what I found:

This bread box was made by the National Can Corp, New York. It was love at first sight! When the vendor told me I could have it for $5, I couldn't find my money fast enough. Once home, I realized I had finally found something to replace the ugly, plastic dog treat container sitting on the counter next to the back door.

Last week I shared my flour sifters. If you missed them, you can see them here. I found another one to add to my collection.

This one is an Androck. Some of the flower pattern can be seen on both sides. It had to be the Cadillac of sifters in the day. The red wooden handle makes it easy to to hold while sifting. It has three levels of fine mesh with an agitator at each level. The flour "rocks" between the second and third mesh were an added bonus for the $3 I paid.

The last flea market find I am sharing this week is this little red handled egg beater.

The large center gear is imprinted with: "HIGH SPEED SUPER CENTER DRIVE BEATER Made in United States of America". I laugh every time I read this. High speed, huh? It can only go as fast as you can turn the handle. I shelled out $2 for this beauty.

All the pictures this week were taken on a small square vintage tablecloth I unearthed in my cedar chest. An appliqued flower on an embroidered long stem graces each corner. It is a bit tattered and torn but only shows that is was a much loved cloth.

I also got another little item at the flea market but I am going to save it for next week as it is not a kitchen item. A little teaser: Marian, our Dream Weaver, will not want to miss it.

Hope you all have a Happy Easter!

My parents still use that hand mixer all the time!
Some people are having trouble viewing my blog and getting a stack overflow message. To fix this, just empty your Temp or Temp Internet folder. You might also want to consider switching to Firefox as your browser. Just an FYI!

That biscuit or bread box is a
wonderful find to add to your

Nice finds--love the bread box. I was thinking about them the other day--gotta get one. And the sifter and egg beater are great. High speed on a hand beater is hilarious you'll be whipping those egg whites stiff in no time.

What lovely finds. I wish we had flea markets around here - people just don't seem to be into them here - they seem to go for new things and fancy. There is a big one a bit south of here once a year - a long time to wait for a flea market. The thrift stores are great here - just no flea markets. I enjoy your trips to flea markets.

Holey Moley, you hit the jackpot!
I just love all the treasures you found.
Reading your post, I was just thinking. Isn't it funny how when we happen upon a real find, we're scared to death that something will change before we pay and get out of the store. Like we'll let it slip through our hands or someone will grab it or he'll say, "Oh, that's not the right price".
We're funny.

What lovely things all with red on them! I looked at last weeks VTT post while I was here and discovered that you have a twin to my apple sifter! I'm glad we don't have to sift flour but they sure are fun to look at and own!

"High speed" beater.., that is funny.
I guess it was "fast" back then.,., as fast as your hand could go.

You got some good deals. Keep up the good work.
